timing chains
 

my question is these new chain systems aren't like the older one chain and no guides, they now have tensioners and rail guides and some even have smaller chains to advance the timing of the valves .

I have Had problems with other vehicles [no names] with the tesioners and rails wearing out before 70,000 miles, and the cost was over $1,000. Has any issues came up with sonatas chains since I believe 2007- 2011 models or service bulletins on them ?

even if they did it would be under warrenty. but i'm sure that anyone who bought a new sonota isnt up to that kind of mileage yet. give it another year or two for things like that to start showing up

Sonatas have used timing chains since the 2006 model year in either engine. There were issues with the original tensioners used on the 3.3 V6 but new parts replaced the original in 2007, I believe. If you want to know the exact date the new parts were used in production it is listed in the TSB's you can find on hmaservice.com.



I have not had any timing chain issues with my 2006 Sonata with the 3.3 V6. It currently has about 127,000 kms (~79,000 miles) on it however I did not purchase it new so the tensioners could have been replaced before I bought it. It had 57,000 kms on it when I took ownership.

I now have 122,000 on my 2001 sonata 4 cylinder and it still runs great ,you know it may sound a bit strange that i find the belt driven with out the advanced variable timing valves are much more reliable unless they really did there research with the newer chain timing set ups on the 4 cylinders only I'm interested in because i have had friends who bought the 6 cylinder and said its way too much power, :biggrin:
