K&N filters

will throwing in a K&N air filter help alot?

Help in what way? They generally don't filter as well as a paper filter, but do add a couple of HP. They are also washable, which means you buy them once and re-use them. In the long term, this saves money over buying paper filters.

so by them not filtering as welll as regular paper filters, does that mean that more crap will go into the engine and jack it up?

There's debate... Google it.

I tried a K&N air filter in my 2008 Sonata I4 engine, I found slightly better throttle action but the gas mileage dropped by about 1 mpg. I am back to using the paper filter now.

You cannot pass more air without passing more dirt, and dirt is lethal to engines. If the engine failed and Hyundai found evidence of a K&N being installed, do you think they would honor the warranty?

it you install it sideways, they might have an issue with your warranty.

If you have more surface area, you can filter BETTER and still pass more air.
