Hyundai adds new engine to Santa Fe (3.5L)
Hyundai Santa Fe gets new V6 engine and colors
Hyundai announced that the Santa Fe will be available with a new 3.5-liter V6 powerplant.
Coupled with Hyundai's 5-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission, the new engine produces 195hp at 6000rpm and 219lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm. The new V6 is optional on GLS versions, while it is standard on the LX. ABS with traction control remains optional on GLS versions built with the 2.7 V6, but has become standard on 3.5 powered GLS. ABS was already standard on the LX.
The Santa Fe also changes colors. Pine Green and Crystal Blue have been deleted from the color palette, in favor of Artic Blue and Canyon Red. Canyon Red is available only on 3.5-powered models. Destination charges remain at USD 525.
Prices are as follows:
BASE five-door SUV: USD 17,549
BASE AT five-door SUV: USD 18,349
GLS 2.7 five-door SUV: USD 20,099
GLS 2.7 4WD five-door SUV: USD 21,599
GLS 3.5 five-door SUV: USD 21,499
GLS 3.5 4WD five-door SUV: USD 22,999
LX five-door SUV: USD 23,499
LX 4WD five-door SUV: USD 24,999

Is there room in the 03 engine bay for a 3.5L? Maybe this will be an option on the 05 chassis.
I'll keep my fingers crossed. 2005 is when I will be able to buy a new sports car. I have my eye on the RX8 at the moment but if Hyundai comes up with something promising....

the 3.5L is the big delta.
It is in the following vehicles
Hyundai XG350
Kia Sorento
Hyundai Santa Fe
My guess is that soon it will be in the Sonata as well, and that the XG will be upgraded to the XG450 (4.5L V8) and the "baby" XG350 will remain.
I agree, the 3.5L isn't that great for HP or torque, and it sux for gas mileage.

I wish that Hyundai will experiment with a couple more powerful engines, or some turbo engines. Anyway, its good to see Hyundai putting the bigger engine into the Santa Fe.

Yeah, we have at least SOME definitive proof that Hyundai can make a good cast-iron block. I'm not too convinced the pistons would live, but I think it might be cool to pump about 10psi into one of those and see if it doesn't suddenly open up.
Wonder if it has the same abysmal cylinder head design problems like the "other" cast iron block we all love so much wink
