If my car is going to be in a garage for the winter, is it a necessity to have a cover on it? Or can I leave it uncovered and it'll be ok?

Unless you are going to be doing woodworking or whatever in your garage, you'll be fine without. Covers keep the sun off, and wind-driven small debris. Hopefully, your garage will be doing that for you.
Your car will still have a nice thick coating of dust on it by the spring. That dust could leave micro scratches in the paint. Even though it's in the garage, I would still cover it. I put a cover on mine and it looks like the day I washed and waxed it before putting it away, when it comes out in the spring. Your interior will accumulate a lot of dust too without a cover on. So in my opinion...do it! Dont get just any tarp or cover though. Make sure it's a soft one with microfiber that is touching the paint. If not, then again you risk getting scratches or spiderwebbing in the paint when you install or remove the cover in the spring.
