Default is idling to warm up car engines before driving still necessary?

several articles online recommend against doing so.

what you think?

there's debate about today's modern cars that they don't need to be warmed up,

i'd let my car warm up for 10 or 20 minutes, so that the oil gets warmed up and flowing..besides..winter morning sucks.

yup i still warm mine up so its nice and toasty when i get in, and so the its running at optimal temp when i take off in the morning. plus ive heard valves getting more carbon buildup when its being revved while the motor is still winter cold. thats what some VW technicians at work have told me, take it or leave it

I've been driving since the 70's and seldom let the car warm up for more than a minute. I live in Illinois.

Depends on where you live. I garage my car and rarely see temps below freezing. I let it warm up for a minute or so "to get the juices flowing" - if it's below freezing, I'll make sure it gets 1-2 minutes before I drive.

HELL no.

Running an icy cold engine at idle for 10 minutes wears it out worse than gently driving it for 10 minutes. You know when you build a fresh motor, you need to run it at ~2500 rpm for a while because it gives you the most oil pressure for the least wear? Yeah.

Also it's a huge waste of fuel.

I let mine warm up for a minute or two and thats it. I dont drive it like I stole it though until the engine temps come up to normal.

The Jeep however, in the middle of winter, I'll start it so it warms up the inside before I leave the house in the morning.
