Gas questions about storing car for the winter
 

Toronto can get some cold and snowy winters as most of the Canadian members here know. So I'm putting my car into storage at the end of the month since it's getting colder. I know about the maintenance stuff to do but what I'm confused on (and cant find a definite answer) is about the gas.



1. Do I store the car with a full tank of gas or should I run it until there's about a quarter tank left and then store it?

2. I only use 87 octane since I'm not tuned. Should I keep 87 in it or should I put some higher octane in while it's stored? What about a bottle of octane booster?

3. Should I put a bottle of fuel treatment in right before it's stored?



The car will probably be still be started every couple of month just to keep the battery from draining and I wont let it run for long. 10 minutes at most. This has me really :scratchhead: so thank you for the help with this. I dont want to ruin my car by storing it and then something go wrong with the engine in the spring.

^ Stocker beat me to it. I use that every winter and never had a problem with any of my cars in the spring. I just put mine away last week so I feel your pain. I drove the car until there was about a quarter tank left and then put the fuel stabilizer in it. If you're really worried, put a bottle of octane booster in it too but you can by-pass that if you throw a couple gallons of Premium in before the car is put away. I wont be starting my car at all for the next 5 or 6 months since the battery is taken out.

I've always been told to top off the tank. This reduces condensation buildup in the tank. Have been storing the tib this way for years and never had a problem in the spring.

Why not just drive the car? I enjoy my car all year around. Oh, that's right. You have the suck weather.

It's not about being able to drive all winter. I dont know about others, but around here I dont drive a nice car in the winter for the following reasons:

• Road Salt: It's eats cars alive here and you'll start to see a car rust like crazy after 4 or 5 years
  
• Chunks Of Ice: It's very common to see people hit chunks of ice in the roads that will destroy bumpers and panels
  
• Bad Drivers: There's a lot of drivers out there who do not know how to drive in bad conditions which means you risk getting your car slammed into
  
• Pot Holes: Road craters begin forming in December and get worst until March/April (when they start to get filled in).
  

Fill the tank, take out the battery to store inside and let the car sit.

You like to take the fun out of antagonizing people :thumbdown:



That said I'd still love to see a GC on Traxx playing in the show. Even if they cost more than most reasonable cars. :blink:
