My wifes friend got rear ended recently and the frame got contorted so it is considered totaled. There is a possible chance i could get the engine from it but i want to know if it is viable. It is an '03 tib. So thats a beta II right? would it be as easy as a beta to put in a 98 x3?

That is a Beta II (assuming it's a 4-cyl at all). It's not as easy of a swap as a Beta I would be for you. There is a DIY on RDT about converting a Beta II to run on a Beta I ECU and wiring harness.
First off, the install is basically plug and play. However the ECU is a entirely different animal. You would have to change ECU's, which would make the car non-emission/rebuilt for state emission and insurance purposes.
The beta 1 is a better choice regarding the X3 Accent beta swap. The X3 ECU can be used. The beta 2 has a map sensor as well as revisions on other sensors making a beta 2 swap into a X3 more difficult.

sounds good.. just exploring the option because it presented itself.
