Steering Wheel Vibration-PLEASE HELP!
At idle, my steering wheel vibrates pretty bad. I don't know how long it's been like this, but it hasn't been for over a few weeks. Does anyone know what could be the problem? I've tried to tilt the wheel, but that has no effect. When I push the wheel towards the front of the car, like grip it hard and push, it stops. Should I take it in?

Does your car idle high? Sometimes a high idle will cause vibration.

tires may need re-balanced... smile.gif

No, it shouldn't be the tired needed rebalancing, he said it happens when he's idling.. Mine shakes pretty bad too, but I think it's because I have a low idle. After I turn the headlights on, and brakelights sometimes too it starts to happen. smile.gif

missed the "idling" part. smile.gif

It couldn't be the tires because this happens at idle and the car is sitting still. I had a simmilar problem but it could be a long shot... Someone at the dealership bent the support bar under the transmission to the point where it touched the bottom of the tranny. This would transfer engine vibration directly to the chassis instead of going throught the engine mounts. I solved this problem temporarily by pushing a piece of heavy duity rubber between the two metal surfaces.
Another problem is that it may be idling too low. The engine will vibrate when it idles just above stall. If you go under the hood and make the car idle a little faster by adjusting the idle screw, you may find the vibration stop. Your car should idle at around 700rpm without A/C. I hope this helps you out. |

Does the vibration go away if you rev the engine, or does it just vibrate faster?
If the vibration goes away when you rev the engine, it might be just what cottonmouth said. If not, then the list is quite lengthly. Loose sterring linkage Torn/loose motor mounts Torn/loose tranny mounts low/rough idle Bad plugs causing rough idle bad gas causing rough idle bad coilpack/wires causing rough idle Loose steering wheel assembly (don't ask me HOW it would get loose...) |
it may be helpful to know that i have one bigger tire on my care and have had for about cause im waiting to get my other one put on, from when i had a flat, he gave me one that was the same size only a little bigger he said. could this have anything to do with it? to my knowledge thoguh, this was ahppening before the tire was changed. also...i tried to rev the engine, and it does help, but doesnt stop completely. it idles at around 900 RPMs and only does it it seems like when you have driven for a few minutes and the engine gets between hot and cold. does this help at all?
