Default Hydraulic Lash Adjuster

Back in 2003-2004, I made the mistake of running 0W-30 synthethic for a few 1000 miles... I ended up raling on it when it was a 1/2 quart low and I think I weakened one of the HLAs. It hasn't given me much issue since then as long as I only run 10W-30 conventional oil with Hyundai OEM filters.
My most recent oil change, it "ticked" for about 2 weeks before quieting down. Other than replacing the HLA, has anyone ever had one of these be the cause of catastrophic engine failure? I'm doing about 700 miles a week... doesn't seem to be an issue at highway speeds when the engine is warmed up...

[FYI - I am averaging 40 mpg and have over 230,000 miles on the damn thing (original clutch)... Sucks being in TN in a black car with no A/C.
I'm really hesistant about fixing anything at this point for fear of killing the gas mileage...]

I think I have it figured out... I know I have to use the Hyundai filter, none of the aftermarket ones have the drainback valve that helps keep the pressure up to activate the lash adjuster.
Discovered that the Walmart private label oil is absolute shiite... it HLA tapped for about 3-4 week...

Using Quaker State advanced and it has been quiet since the oil change...
