"Grinding" into reverse?

03 Accent Standerd Tranny

Every now and again when I put the car in reverse the shifter doesn't go all the way in, if I don't notice it the gears grind a little when I let up off the clutch. All I have to do to prevent it is slowly let off the clutch while pulling lightly on the shifter and it'll fall in place when the clutch is about a quarter of the way up.

It's more of an annoyance than anything else now, but will it be a bigger problem later?

That's typical. If you feel it not going into place you can move the shifter back to the neutral position, let the clutch pedal up, press the clutch pedal again, shift into reverse. That works every time for me. The only thing to worry about is if you're grinding the gears a lot or if you feel it catch and bang into gear. then you could be hurting something.

You have to push the clutch in first! tongue.gif wink.gif

*lol* Just kidding.

Yeah....it is a common thing sometimes. When was the last time you changed your tranny oil? Do you have any grinding in any other gears? It could be nothing, or it could be something basic like needing fresh oil, or something big like your syncros going.

Yeah, it's been far too long since I've changed the tranny oil, that's most likely it.

It's been a little rough getting into second and third recently, but rarely grinding.

Replace your tranny lube with Redline MT-90. It'll feel like a whole new transmission. Better than new even.

I'll give it a shot.
Pep Boys or Advance Auto I'd assume?

I order it online, it's hard to find here. It could be easy to find near you though.

Don't buy the Redline 75w90, Just the MT-90.

MT-90 IS THE SH*T! I couldnt believe how much smoother and easier my tranny shifted after changing to redline. I'll never use anything else for any other car! smile.gif

Wow...I sound like an infomercial there.... laugh.gif

it's typical for the tranny to grind into reverse if your car wasn't at a full stop..

if you shift to reverse while the car still is rolling forward..it'll grind 99%..
happens with all cars..but for car with well designed manual boxes..it rarely happens..
