Fuel Filter Replacement
Could someone tell me how to replace my fuel filter? I asked the dealership how much it would cost me to do and they told me an amount that I was not about to pay. for one thing... I doubt it will take an hour to do...
So anyways... I figured I could pick one up from the dealership and proceed to replace it myself. How hard can it be?
I know that it is located under the clutch fluid resevoir by the brake booster. Is it a PITA to get at and what sort of tools would I need?
Sorry bout the questions I could figure out for myself. But I don't feel like farting around under my hood right now. It is dark, cold, and I don't feel like it. wink.gif
Anyone??? Anyone???

Chris H had a good post on this over on FX. Search there for better info.
I did this a few months ago. First of all, it's a PITA to do, but I agree, it's not worth paying a dealer$hit monkey to do.
Anyway, it's basically two bolts, one on top, and a tough SOB on the bottom. There may be a support screw here and there, but you'll see that (I'm doing this from memory). First, remove the top bolt. You can depressurize the fuel line if you like, I didn't. After the top bolt is out, you can dislodge the fuel line. Now comes the tricky part.
Be prepared to cuss like a madman, because this next one's on there tight! You need two wrenches, one to hold the fuel filter and another to work the bolt (it's a sleeve bolt that goes around the lower fuel line). Ideally, you want to get this in a "scissor" arrangement, where you can sqeeze your hands together for leverage. This is the ideal case only.
It is tough to reach, there is almost no room for the tools to fit, and like I said, it's on there tight.
Basically then you just play around until you get the right leverage and the thing breaks loose. After that, remove the lower fuel line (be careful, fuel will spill out of it) and replace with the new filter.
The way I got that lower bolt loose was I had my g/f hold the wrench on the filter and I got under the car and worked the lower nut. This way, we could both have two hands to work with. In my case, one was to brace, and the other on the wrench. Thank god my girl is freakishly strong or that thing would have never broke free.
Sorry if the directions are confusing; like I said, Chris H's are more thorough on FX.
good luck,
ac
