From engine to rear bumper, you have the headers, one or two catalytic converters, sometimes a resonator or two, and the muffler.

A cat-back exhaust system usually includes pre-fabricated piping from the catalytic converter on back.

And yeah, carx is capable of doing complete end-to-end work, but there's a fairly good chance that they won't. Removing or relocating a cat while it is under warranty is illegal and carries up to a $15K fine for the shop(new cars have a 5-yr warranty, replacements have 2-year) unless the cat is in non-working condition. And yep, you need to move the cat to install headers.

That being said, many places do this sort of thing all the time--when you go to a larger diameter exhaust you'd be best to go with a high-flow cat(don't go without one, a high-flow costs you less than 1 hp performance, without you pollute as much as 50 cars). You just have to find a shop that's willing to agree that your cat has become fouled, and needs to be replaced wink The large chains are less likely to do this--depends on the manager though.

Newbie-

By federal law, it is illegal to remove OR MOVE a functioning cat converter. That being said, lots of folks do it.

A high flow cat converter is one with fewer internal catalist plates than the *standard* cat design. It is also built with a better quality design internally compared to OEM units.

A high flow cat is about $50 to $75, but they can be as expensive as $200 if you want to go with a *top of the line*.

The main reason for switching to a high flow cat, is that you keep the pipe diameter constant from the headers, to the cat converter, into the connecting piping, to the muffler. Installing headers, and a 2.5* exhaust system is good, but if you still have a stock 1.75* cat converter, you're not getting much benefit.

Yeah, you're going to want to talk to the shop and make sure you have one that will do the work for you before you start buying parts.

And when you're doing exhaust headers you're not going to get proper performance unless you're replacing all of the piping, from the motor to the rear bumper.

For cats, check out carsound, or search this forum on 'high flow cat' and you'll find lots of talk about them.
