Does it make you a better driver ?

What do you guys think ?

Although there's probably a law of diminishing returns. For example, F1 drivers know a decent amount about how their cars work: Their mechanics know far more but can't drive like they do. Eh.

Maybe?? Depends on the person.

+ rep to wheels for proper use of the word "eh". lol

Way to go eh!

i would say yes, as you mechanically know your car and know what to expect from it as far as its driving limits.

but i never push my car to its limits on public, i save that for the track.

It depends what you mean by "better". If you mean safer and perhaps in being more careful with the vehicle (i.e. not driving over curbs or riding the clutch, forgetting to release the parking brake), then yes. However, although having knowledge of how a vehicle operates both mechanically and dynamically can definitely assist in improving driver skills, it by itself does not equate to better driver performance.

I say definitely.

I agree with Tak82 having knowledge of a car mechanically you will know the vehicles limits. Can't say people that don't know anything about cars makes them less of a good driver; I feel like that can be the other side of the question. But knowing how cars work isn't going to prevent you from getting a ticket or having an accident.

Tak82 04-17-2013 03:52 PM

i don't push my car to its limit's if i'm not sure if the old components will handle the abuse..if i changed my ball joints, tie rod ends and struts and springs and sway links and all bushings, got a set of 15's with low pro summer tires and alignment..the car will be flat and quick around the corners...

but that's just common sense isn't it?
