I seriously have searched to find this answer but so far I haven't found anything. Anytime I search "how to get a black chrome look without chrome" I get the Duplicolor Shadow black chrome kit which clearly states that you need a chrome base.

So I was wondering what would happen if I spray painted something with a base coat of metallic gray and then painted over that with the black tint spray paint that's meant for headlights? Would I get something ugly or would it look more like black chrome?

If that's not possible, I would like to achieve the look of the Duplicolor Metalcast in gray (example attached) but no one actually seems to sell the Metalcast gray, only the red, purple, and blue. So how do I get a similar look without the actual paint?

Thanks for all your help!

It may work if you try some spray chrome first before the black chrome. I haven't tried it but here's a vid and rating on 16 different spray chrome paints.

I've never had any luck with chrome spray paint. It always came out looking more silver or gray.

I think that's what I'm worried about. I feel like trying to do the gray metal look might turn out better instead of the black chrome.

I used the Nightshades tail light tint spray on brushed aluminum and it came out looking like darker aluminum.

I would think painting it chrome first would be your best bet.
