Default Gel coat versus clear coat

I saw that some carbon fiber stuff comes with a gel coat and some comes with a paint clear coat. Is the gel stronger and does it hold up better to fading? What about polishing? Can you use the same products on a gel that you would use on a clear?

Gel coat is going to fade. Clear coat is going to fade. You have to keep your stuff maintained if you want to keep it nice, which involves the same kind of waxes for both clear and gel coatings. That said, the cheapest of both are going to fade faster. Hopefully if you spend more for a gel coated CF part it will be in part because the gel is a newer chemistry that is more resistant to sunlight.
