Transmission drain.

the tranny drain plug, is that it, just aft of the pan in the side of the bottom of the tranny case? Looks like a big bolt, kinda like the oil drain bolt?

somebody on HP said leaving the drain bolt out and going through the gears until an assistant said there was no more fluid draining was a simple way to drain the entire tranny instead of just the case...is that the way? sounds kinda fishy to me...

and the book says check; should I also check or just replace the filter?

No, do NOT run the engine or row through the gears while draining the fluid. Automatic or Manual.

On the auto tranny, the drain bolt is on the pan. On the manual tranny, there is no "pan" it is just the bottom bolt.

With the auto tranny, you also have to be careful to drain the tranny cooler, or you can leave a pint or two of old fluid in the cooler. When/if you drain the tranny cooler, make sure run the engine for 30 seconds, row through the gears(park through 1st then back to park), then shut the engine off, and check the fluid level again, that should be enough to fill up the tranny cooler. You should also then check the fluid level once it has been brought up to operating tempature.

As far as I know, there is NO tranny filter fluid. Digging through HMA service, I could not find one.

i was the one who said you can run the tranny with an assistant to empty it. it is possible and safe i have done it on over a 100 cars, you just cant drive it with no fluid. its just like your engine, if there is no oil in it you can start it for a minute or two but no longer, but there should be no reason to do it in the first place. if you have a manual tranny you dont need to run thru the gears because if you drain the tranny all the fluid drains out anyway. if you are going to take down the pan on the auto you might as well go the extra bolt or two it takes to remove the filter, its only about 10bucks if that. any other questions or you want me to verify how i know any of this just ask

hmm...unless it was partially obscured by the plastic shields, I didn't see any drain plug on the trans pan. I'll have to look again and if I can't see it I'll post a drawing.

I couldn't imagine the thing not having an ATF filter...should be just right there when you drop the pan. Maybe I'll stop by the dealership service dept. and ask them... I dunno...

Here you can see the drain bolt in the pan. It is "bold" along with the bolts to hold the tranny pan in place

In all reading I did online, they never mention an ATF fluid filter. In all the install/removal/components sections, they never mention a filter.

Thanks alot. If mine is different from that one you know I'll post it up.

I wonder why they didn't run a filter?

Random Mar 13, 2002 12:22 PM

I'm not saying they don't...I just dont see a reference to one anywhere. I'll have to dig through my maintenance papers and see if the OEM handbook mentions ATF filter replacement.

I'd appreciate it.
