I just bought a 98 Tiburon, and have been having problems with the transmission. The guy I bought it from did say that the clutch was replaced fairly recently, but did not say exactly how recently. Firstly, most of the time it is extremely hard/impossible to shift into any gears - the shifter just doesn't want to go into any gates, no matter how hard you try to get it in. Rarely, it behaves, and is nice and easy, but most of the time its not. I've found that my best bet for getting it to go into gear is to shift like immediately as I push in the clutch. That makes it a little more likely to go in.

The other problem is that almost every time I try to get into reverse, it grinds. It usually takes me 2 or 3 tries to get it in reverse.

Any ideas? I'm new to owning a manual, so I basically don't have any prior experience to go on.

Does the clutch disengage completely? For example, if you're in gear with the clutch pedal pressed, does the engine idle at its normal rpm?

I'd first check the trans fluid, there's a filler bolt which you can remove and stick your finger in and feel if the fluid is up to that level.

I haven't spent much time driving it, but I'm pretty sure it disengaged completely. I'll have to check though to be sure. Where is the bolt on the trans?

This recently happened to me on my accent.

Bleed your clutch cylinder, see if it helps. Mine it helped a tad but didn't do much. I than went to the dealership and got a whole new seal kit for the clutch cylinder. It's mostly just one seal for the piston. I swapped it out and bam, no more grinding gears.

Yah, again to what radu said, Make sure the clutch is disengage completely.
Im pretty sure reverse and first dosent have the syncro so everyone has problems with those some time.

What I do when Im having problems with reverse is put her in neutral and release and engage the clutch again.


BUT for what your describing there can be many problems that are all related.

First, check if the clutch is engageing FULLY and check the clutch fluid.
Make sure the clutch fluid is bleed properly.

ALSO how many miles are on your car, Maby its time to change your tranny fluid.
I am currently using Redline Mt-90 from Summit Racing.com. It really helped for my car.

Maby you should invest in an aftermarket shifter later on... My Ark Also really helped clean up the "Slop" in the shifter.

After changing the shifter and trans oil, I can spin 2nd when ever I want, Not saying its good but thats how much it helped.

Just my 2cents..

well the car has 105k on it, and I'd say the only way the trans fluid has been replaced by the previous owner would be if he brought it somewhere for a tune up and they just did it without him specifically asking for it. I'll check that out.

i have the same problem with reverse, still havent found a fix for it and have done all but change the seals/tranny fluid

also noticed im starting to have a problem with first, grinds really bad shifting into it, i will check some stuff out and see if it helps

O BTW its really easy to change the tranny fluid, cept for the part that it smells horrible.

HA!! Tanc forgot to mention that on top of bleeding the clutch / replacing worn out hydraulics, you NEED to check the clutch pedal freeplay. Grab a ruler, and measure how much the clutch pedal moves up and down ALL the way, using your hand until you feel resistance. Remember, you're just checking the FREEplay. To adjust, you have to get a wrench on the clutch pedal pushrod, which is inside the car.
