Power Steering Question

I once asked on another board how much horse power is lost to the power steering pump and was told 1-2 hp max.

I removed my belt yesterday(I like the handling better without it) and the pickup is considerable. I can really feel more power throughout all gears.

Does anyone know the HP lost due to powersteering on a 02 Accent GS?

Thanks smile.gif

Just removing the power steering belt is a bad thing. You leave fluid in the system that you must move around by manually turning the wheel. You should drain about 3/4ths of the fluid, remove the pump assembly, and cap the fluid lines as they leave the steering box. That will give you even better steering feel, and remove about 10 lbs of weight.

You will still only get about 1 or 2 HP to the wheels of free'd up power.

Random We had another thread I started about power steering removal as well. I think he should also pressurize the power steering system if hes going to remove the entire pump. Of course noone has confirmed if that one wqay valve is in there to prevent from moving the rack with a pressurized system without pump.

Also this is another way you can tell how much Power steering is loosing,

When I gutted my #2 cat, put rear section 2 1/4" with straight thru muffler, removed power steering and put on the BBTB (61mm ring) without boring the IM, I picked up a full half second. Went from 16.8's to 16.3's. I also changed from a flexible intake hose (weapon R ram air hose with Hiper Industries cone) to a home made 3" pipe with the same cone) at that time as well.
