I tried to connect the obd2 to my car and it will not initialize. It wont log on. I have a 2001 tib. I heard that there are instances where on some 2001's it wont read. Any ideas on what might be causing this. We have tried it on a santa fe, an elantra and even a volvo and it reads. Any thoughts on this matter. Thanx.

 

If you have the same reader I do, (little adapter thingy from a website w/ software), try contacting Alex Peper ( alexpeper@email.msn.com ). I hear he's pretty good at limited tech support and gets back to people fairly quickly. However, it's been over a year since I e-mailed him, so that may have changed.

P.S. I second this, and from what TONY says, there are a few elantras he hasn't been able to read also... we were just hoping someone else found out why...

 

I cannot get mine to connect to 2001+ elantras.

I've never had a problem connecting to ANY tibby or any 97-2000 Elantra.

The "gateway" settings affect the speed/quality of connection. if you "optimized" the gateway settings on your software, consider putting them back to default to try to connect to the problematic car.

Some more tips.

#1. Kill all background programs.
#2. Kill any screensavers
#3. Upon boot up, or wakeup from sleep mode, let the laptop "finish" coming up before starting the scan-tool software. If the hard drive is still going crazy in boot up mode, loading all of window's software and stuff, wait for the hard drive to stop, then load scan-tool.
#4. If you are unsuccessful the first time, shut down scantool and reload it. That sometimes works.

lastly. The original batch of OBD-ii cables had a problem with the cable/serial connector. There is a host of resistors and such inside of that little grey thing. The solder joints are not very stable, and they often crack/break. If you cannot connect to ANY car, try cracking that open and examinging the solder joints for cracks. The new cables Alex sells are much longer, and have that "box" connector in the middle, making it much more "durable". I paid the exter $40 for a new cable, and it's increased my connection relability about 90%

If you really need to get inside your ecu then take it to the local hyundai dealer and they will have a manufactuer recomeneded scan tool. Or if you know anyone who has one of the fancier scan tools like a Snap-On or OTC. If you just need to pull DTC's(Diagnostic Trouble Codes) you can do so manually with most OBD-II vehicles by taking a paper clip and jumping the two connectors in the OBD-II connector port. I forget which two so if anybody else know's please help me.
