For the record... Those places don't hire mechanics. They hire unskilled labor that will do whatever their boss tells them to do.

Many many years ago I had a part-time job at a Sears tire center. They flat out told us to attempt the fuel treatment upsell on any car with more than 50k miles and always push the power steering flush. Also unless you asked for some totally off the wall weight, regardless of the car or the request 10w30 what all they put in. I never saw anyone deliberately shortchanged service, but we were more or less instructed to be pretty unscrupulous when recommending service. Generally you could tell by the car how much each person was willing to spend and how gullible they are. Female with a new-ish Mercedes recommend the works, male 600 burger wrappers on the passenger seat will b*tch about the disposal fee upon checkout.
