OK, so Mechanic 1 changed my CV Axle. AFter 4,000 miles, the seal between the axle and transmission is starting to leak; about 1/2 quart every 2 weeks. I took my car to another mechanic(2) and he said that Mechanic 1 did a bad job installing the CV axle and he didn't have the special tool to put a new seal on. I told Mechanic 1 about it and he said Mechanic 2 was a liar and seals tend to leak on high mileage cars even after a new CV axle. He refused to change the seal under his 5,000 mile repair warranty.

Which Mechanic is right?

what special tool? i put mine in by hand & carefully secure/tapped it in, being cautious of damaging the seal. he should replace it since it falls within the warranty!

why not just print off this thread and show both you mechanics after we have made them look like fools in say....3 days?

sounds to me like he put the wrong seal in or, reused your old ones and said he put a new one in.

put in new seals too when i changed my tranny, no special tool, I just tapped it in

he probably didn't change the seal.. he says "seals tend to leak on high mileage cars even after a new CV axle" <- if he had changed the seal, there would be nothing "high mileage" about a new seal and a new axle (which are the only components that matter here..)

... if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself

Mechanic 1 should have put a new seal in with the axle, your allready there, you allready have the axle out. he can't spend the extra 5 mintues for a new seal??? bah

You mean $5 out of the profit margin. They won't do it unless you specify it, unless you are dealing with an A-number-1 shop.

Ask the BSer to show you proof he put in a new seal. When he can't produce it, make him replace it and the fluid.

If he won't show you proof, contact the BBB for your area, or the local police fraud department.

Replacing the seal with the axle out takes just a few minutes, and those folks doing this with 200,000 miles on their car aren't having issues, so why would yours?

I think I paid $1.49 to the Hyundai dealership for a new seal. Your mechanic is full of shit, and is an ass for not replacing the seal for free. I'm sure you'd have no inability to pay $3 for two new seals if he's worried about the cost.

As radu stated, the only components that would contribute to a leak are
1). The new axle
2). The axle seal

If the seal was replaced, the axle is new, there are no "high mileage" parts that would contribute to the seal leaking. That mechanic is feeding you a bunch of shit.

On the other hand, the other mechanic is equally as stupid. There is no special tool. I used a flathead screwdriver to pop the old one out, and my fingers to pop the new on in.
