Default MAF sensor question

In my 2000 Tibby, the MAF sensor has this protective "grid" in the front opening. Would there be any problems with removing this grid? We can assume that necessary precautions to protect the sensor itself, and to keep debris out of the motor would be used. Just seems to me that it might be a bonus to get rid of it, but wanted to ask opinions first.

Anyone know offhand of any problems with doing this?

You should not remove the screen, it's not only there to protect the sensor but it also straightens out the airflow so the sensor get's an accurate reading.

i did try the "grid" removal trick...
i didn't feel any performance improvement...
so my advise is to let it there for added safety

don't remove that screen, the MAF sensor requires a straight flow of air. I beleive random did this mod and replaced it after he did it.

Anyone know offhand where one could purchase a sensor "other" than the dealer? I'd like to try this, and I'd also like to get a spare sensor, just-in-case...

you can check your local junkyard for wrecked tibby's and elantra's, but apart from that you can check with St Charles (?) autoparts, they give a 30% discount on dealer parts.
