I have been thinking about getting my IM bored out and getting a BBTB. I wanted to know if that would mess with emission testing. I live in California which is pretty strict on smog testing. Has anyone in CA had their car smogged with a bored IM and a BBTB? This is just a possible future mod that I have in mind and if I am going to have to swap it back to stock for getting it smogged, then I probably won't do it.

Highly doubt that it would mess with anything up. There is no way they can tell that your IM is bored out, and for BBTB, you can say it's stock and no one will be able to prove that it's not.

All you are going to do is get more air into your engine which would actually burn fuel more efficiently and have less polutions. Get AEM CAI, I believe they are CARB approved smile.gif

You should be fine, if you were doing something more drastic, like changing your compression ratio or removing your cat, then that would be a different story.

Ive smogged my tibby with a BTB and BIM and it passed with no problems.

Since they are the stock units, they never notice the fact that they are bored out.

Should be fine... I don't see how an IM/BBTB would effect emissions in any way that would cause any major drop in emission quality.

You may not see how.. but CARB is a very strict and odd entity. They like to see stock cars, even if they pollute more-so that modified. Case in point, one of my favorite cars, the BMW 635 (original). When they came to California, they had thermal reactors instead of cats. Thermareactors tend to warp the heads and are not as efficent as a good cat. If you put a car on a 635, you get better performance and a cleaner exhaust. you also fail the visual test because you tampered with the emissions the car was "designed for"

However, I would think a bored IM and either a BBTB or even throwing the stock on just for the test, would fly under the radar.

^ yep, as anyone in cali will tell you... CARB sucks. The good thing is that the IM & TB bored is not a visual difference. They would need a reason to rip off the TB to see the difference.

Cool Thanks everyone, I just wasn't sure if if added air and fuel would have any impact on the test. I do have a AEM CAI and it didn't have a problem last time I went for smog. They just had the problem with my header only because of where the bung for the O2 sensor is located, which is on one of the pipes. He said if it was located where they all collect it might work, but then I don't know if you are supposed to have it close to the engine.
Now I just need to find a BBTB for my car. Like everyone else I have been seeing on these boards. Getting hard to find them now without haveing to pay a lot of money. Im just planning of getting the IM bored out to about 60 or 61 with a matched BBTB.
