Default A/F Guage Operation and Reading It

I eliminated my choices of guages to Autometer, since they are so easy to come by. I checked out about the operation of the A/F guage and it has sort of confused me. How exactly do you know if your running lean/rich if the meter bounces back and forth? See this link, then click on "tech tips" on the left, and then "A/F Ratio":

It says that this is what it normally does, so what does it do when it goes lean/rich and how do you read it?

Jon,
It will bounce back and forth until you hit the gas...at that point it will start functioning properly, and you will be able to get a reading off of it.

Great. So once I press on the gas, the O2 sensor will start sending the signal and the guage will show only one light at a time?

Think I'm gonna get myself a gift for my birthday today. tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

To better understand the workings of the O2 sensor and the ECU control read this: http://www.fuelairspark.com/Information/Su.../closedloop/htm

I just realized the earlier link is not linking but the main point as they point out is "Closed loop mode means that the ECU will compare the measured air/fuel ratio to the target air/fuel ratio and automatically increase or decrease fuel accordingly." That's why the gauge swings back and forth. "In open loop mode, the ECU will still use the O2 sensor to read air/fuel ratios, but will not adjust delivery as in closed loop mode." This is where an AFC kicks ass big time.

Yeah, if you are running too rich in open loop mode, you actually lose power by going to wide open throttle. This way, you can use the SAFC to tune down the fuel and actually get more power. Red got like 7 to 10 HP by lowering the fuel.

Of course, only have it tuned on a dyno with a wideband O2 sensor, or you can seriously f$%@ up your engine.
