Default Exhaust questions

Hey there,

I'm trying to get a general idea about a catback system for my 2002 Elantra GLS. I've searched through some of the forum but am still a little worried about the size of the pipe. I don't want to lose any performance so what would be a good setup? I don't think I'll put headers on it yet... maybe in 2 or 3 months. For now I'd like something that would let me upgrade to headers in the future and still give me good performance with my stock headers. Could y'all give me some suggestions?

Thanks!!
Spatch!

P.S. Here's a muffler I was looking at since the Elantra doesn't have a cut out in the bumpre for the muffler.

You shouldn't worry too much about the size of the pipe- usually you can go to about 2.25 inch without running into bending problems. larger than that and you will most likely find problems with fitting it under your car- If you shorten the bend radius of the pipe too much it will buckle, weakening the pipe and constricting flow.

Well, I've ordered a Apexi N1 Muffler for a custom catback, but figured I might as well order the SR 4-2-1 headers(these will fit an automatic right?) to go with it. I'm going to take it all to a exhaust shop and have them run 2.25" piping. But I have a coule of questions about the o2 sensors. Where do the o2 sensors go? The exhaust shop may know, but just incase I'd like to be able to show them where. Also should I replace the stock cat with a highflow or does it really matter?

Thanks!

The o2 sensors go on either side of the cat, where they are now. Their purpose is to measure the change in exhaust gas properties through the cat, which gives the ECU an idea of how to adjust the mixture.

You can keep the stock cat, but if it's the only thing left from the stock system, it's sort of silly to keep that as a restriction. Spend the 60 bucks, get a high-flow. Tampering with the cat is illegal while under warranty anyways, so moving is the same as replacing in the eyes of the law, if the exhaust shop will do one they'll do the other.

So, How about this:
SR 4-2-1 Headers, 2.25" Piping,Hiflow cat,resonator/glasspack,Apex N1 Muffler w/ silencer.

This is what I'm looking at working with. I don't want it to be horribly loud just somewhat noticeable. :-)

Let me know what you think!
