I have a 99 tubby, I think that carries the Beta 2 engine. I always thought that the block was aluminium based, but I just read somewhere that beta engines are Iron.

what's the deal here ?

reason that I ask because I'm looking for a 3th gen (don't shoot rolleyes.gif ) and I was reading about F/I, and the delta engine ain't iron, right.

Beta blocks are Cast Iron, with Cast Aluminum Heads
Delta blocks are Cast Aluminum, with Cast Aluminum heads.

Without intended to open the whole can of worms regarding which block is better. If you want gonzo HP (over 350 WHP) then you should stick with the Beta block. If you want under 350 WHP, then either Beta or Delta will work.

So for pure HP a i4 is better then a V6.

Plus save some money on the purchase to start your F/I laugh.gif

One thing I might want to point out. Lots of folks DREAM and maybe even PLAN for gonzo HP. But once they realize how expensive it is, they scale their plans back quite a bit. let's face it. I only know of 4 300+ WHP Beta motors (of those only 2 have been dyno'd, the others are educated guesses)

So...that being said... there's a 99% likelyhood of you staying below 300 WHP, in which case, either block will work fine.

The GK (gen3) has the disadvantage of weight, and a more rearward weight bias, but you can get the 6-speed tranny and there's a more current aftermarket for it.

The Gen1/Gen2 (RD1,RD2) are lighter, have nearly 50/50 weight distribution, but are only available in 5 speeds. Another advantage is their lower cost, and better used part availability when you need to replace/upgrade stuff.

In the end, it comes down to personal preference. If you really like the Gen3 Body style, you can get it with a beta motor if you are planning on going for over 350 WHP. If you're going to keep your HP more reasonable, then there's nothing wrong with the V6 Delta motor.

My personal preference is for the RD1 body style, but that's just me. Plenty of folks here love the RD2 body style, and others love the GK (Gen3) body style. It's up to you as to what floats your boat.

BTW.. 97-98-99-00-01 = Beta1 engine
03+ Tiburon's and 01+ Elantra's = Beta 2 or Betat 2.5
