Cats
On my 1997 Hyundai Coupe I have only ONE cat which is located after the manifold. If I do away with this cat I am told I will trigger a cel because the cars brain needs the cat to run right. Well as my O2 sensor is in the manifold I don't think that doing away with my cat should be a problem or trigger a cel, Is this Right?. I think my car will still pass its emisions test as cars in the U.K. run pretty lean and our laws are not as strict as the U.S.A. There is a Coupe in the U.K that seems to run all right with no cat and a supercharger. All help would be welcome,
Cheers.
Cheers.

Your car has OBDII not OBDI. which means you have 2 O2 sensors not just one. The second sensor is located somewhere behind and underneath the engine. You will trigger the CEL but it does nothing to the performance of the car. if anything it will help it. The car will run a little richer in a/f ratio because the OBDII will dump a little more fuel. SO your gas milage will go down a little. Plus you will have a little more top end power with a little bit of a loss in the lower RPMs due to less back pressure. Hope this helps. Keep in mind also without a cat your exhuast will be louder and have a higher pitch to it. Also please see this thread:

It is only worth about 1 to 2 horse power. read the thread following this one.
BTW most of Europe and the U.K. have stricter laws than most of in the states.

No you wont trigger the cel ive been running without a cat since i had my turbo fitted(about 1 1/2 months now) and there is not sign of any cel coming on.I think uk must operate a totaly different system to the US on this.It seems to me as if it is not even monitored on ours.Unles my sensor can detect mine in my cellar.

If I'm not mistaken, Only North American Spec Cars have OBD-ii. The rest of the world does not "check" for a cat, the o2 sensor is simply there for Air/Fuel ratio checks.
As Jon stated, your car should run fine without a cat. However, not having a cat is not a good idea. One car without a cat puts out as much emissions as 100 cars with cats. Spend $50 and pick up a high flow cat when you go with Headers/extractors and you will keep your tailpipe clean and not seriously affect performance.

Totaly agree i have a 2 1/2 inch cat ready i just ran out of cash to get the full stainless system made as the alpine kit needed a little extra work when it was fitted so it robbed the money i had for the exhaust.
