Default Catback or just straight-flow?

O.K. I did a search on cat-backs, read a lot of posts but still need some feedback.
I'm ready to move forward with my low-funds exhaust project.
The guys at Auto Enhancement are my usual performance shop crew
and try to work with me. I only have $300 to spend, so they suggested a Powertone muffler
(straight-flow perforated core)
and a cat-back. Or just the Powertone. The piping will obviously be crush not mandrel. Being a California boy I am concerned about any trouble regarding emissions and possible hassles for cops regarding loud exhaust. The guys at A.E. tell me that the Powertone is mellow and low, but can't be sure what the sound will be like with the cat-back.
Not many Hyundais come in to their shop. What advice or comments do you guys have? Random, if you read this, I would appreciate your imput...your here in CA. too. Do I need a pre-silencer or pre-muffler of some sort? I really don't want "loud" I just want a more free-flowing exhaust
and some power gains. I had to eat the $200 on the Nology Hotwires, and can't afford another mistake. Thanks in advance all.

Putting on just a muffler will not give you any noticable gains. A cat back will give you moderate gains, but I was still disapointed and expected more from my cat-back. If you're worried about emissions and tickets, just spend the cash on a GT cam and BBTB and bore out your IM yourself.

Thanks for the reply, sorry you didn't get the results you wanted. I dont expect much from the muffler alone, even though the company claims hp gains for their straight-flow mufflers. The Elantra GLS and GT have identical engines, so I already have the cam. Also, I heard from some one that they lost some hp on dyno after BBTB, so I am still looking into that. I would like SOME change in sound, but not enough to get me pulled over all the time...that would suck.
