Catalytic Converter Question.
I was looking around the forums yesterday just browsing for things that caught my interest and I came across a post about an exhaust question. I saw within the answer of that question that all 2000 Tibbies have 2 catalytic converters. I was under the impression that only the California bound Tibs had the 2 cats. Anyway after I got done reading all of the replies to the post I went outside and took a look for myself... you think I would have saw this before. Low and behold I saw the second cat right under the exhaust manifold. I know I saw that piece before, I didnt think nothing of it and thought it was just a heat shield. hehe guess I was wrong.
Here is my question... Being that I live in PA is it safe to remove one of the cats and the resonator and still pass my emissions test? Keep in mind I am running an Arospeed BOMB muffler. If the answer is yes... what cat should I remove? For now... I just want my tibbie to sound as loud as possible without taking the next step in a complete exhaust setup. The Arospeed BOMB muffler has a nice deep tone that I really like... not a ricey sound at all. But I feel that it should be louder tongue.gif Somewhere down the line I will be doing a complete Exhaust setup, but as of now Im just looking for "cheap" loud sound. :D hehe Thanks guys, Börg |
NEWS FLASH.. .RED WAS RIGHT...
i always thought my elantra had two cats.. because half way down the ehxaust pipe there is a big round "cat" looking thing.. but today, i went to the muffler shop, had them chop off the stock cat-back.. and SURE ENOUGH ITS JUST A F*CKING RESONATOR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my car only has 1 cat !!!! .. the one up by the headers... anyhow, i have a custom made 2 1/4 inch catback with regular crush bends and a standard "turbo" muffler.. i paid $200 for everything.. now watch me go 14.5 at over 95 mph !!!!!!!!!!! |
ford you didnt answer my question, but thanks for your uhhhhhhhhh info. tongue.gif

oops.
just remove the middle resonator (trust me, its not a cat)... your car only has 1 cat.. just like mine.. i THOUGHT it had two. but that big thing in the middle is just ANOTHER resonator.. my car had a total of 3 resonators!!! now they are all gone ! and i spanked me some rice on the way home tonight !!! took out a civic SI, with headers/catback/intake and suspension work... he also had a stage two racing clutch... i came out of the hole sloow... he got just a notch in front of me then i sprayed,, my nose came up hard as i spun the tires and then i hooked, put 5 cars on him by 60mph and i shut off... repeated it again.. and i beat him by 5 cars @ 60mph again!>... then i raced him on motor, and he put 5 cars on me by 60mph . sad.gif damn my car is slow without the juice. |
so your saying to remove everything after the cat on the exhaust manifold? if thats whare you saying i will be cutting out two more units... one looks like another cat (you insist that its a resonator tongue.gif ), and the other is a resonator for sure (looks like a cherry bomb).
ill have the sound now im sure, but how about my emissions? Thanks, Börg |
emissions are not affected by resonators dude.
smile.gif thats just a sound control device. |
Dude, I have a '99 Elantra and removed 2 out of 3 res. If you remove cat and res. there is no way you are gonna pass emissions, you'll be just like me!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Has anyone tried one of these hi-flow cats, if so could you recommend one?? The situation is...we didn't hollow out the cat when we did the race header (boot-leggin'). And now it is melting, so I think I might go with a hi-flow one. Any recommendations would be helpful. thanks!!!
