Can anyone tell me if:
There is a hole to the right of the battery leading down into the fender well however this hole is oval ... can I (without doing something dire to my car) cut the hole to accomodate a 3" pipe for my CAI? (Battery will also be relocated)

the new elantra gt has a cold air tube that comes from that exact hole into the new-redesigned airbox.
also, the new elantra GT comes with a heat sheild that protects the airbox from the engine heat ! smile.gif
SWEET >
also, the new elantra comes with a different intake manifold, unlike the one on my car which actually says 1.8 stamped on the side of it (yet my engine is a 2.0L)... the new one was probly designed specifically for the 2.0L not the 1.8...
sheesh.

I dropped my custom CAI down that same hole, works well. If you aim the piping just right you'll only get about a 30 to 40 deg. bend in the pipe and then it's straight to the MAFS. Less bends means less restrictions, means faster cooler air!

I broke my digicam, so no pics for a couple weeks till the waranty work is done! sad.gif
I made my CAI in 2 stages, the first stage was a "cool" air intake: still inside the engine bay. As you can see in the pic below (sorry about the size) I just rotated the battery out of the way and placed a heat shield filter directly over the opening under the battery. The battery tray is bolted down at 3 points, like a triangle:
---1---
-2---3-
Take point 2 and rotate it to point 1, you'll have to dremel some of the metal away to get the bolt to line up but it will. This leaves full view of the opening in question. I simply used 2 screw ties to hold the battery to the tray (see pic).
To drop the filter into the wheel well is a bit more involved, remove the battery and tray to give you room to work, then you'll have to cut out the opening to be able to fit the piping in at the correct angle, once thats complete and you've test fitted the CAI, try to put the tray back and you'll find the side of the tray needs to be cut as well (at least mine did). You can do this anyway you want either simply hack off about and inch from that end of the tray, or cut out a radius piece so the tray goes in right around the pipe (much harder choice, but nicer looking) Then put your battery back in, clamp it down and everyone will auhh with envy! Not really, but you will have your very own custom CAI!
Don't diss the dirty engine bay please, it has since been taken care of.
You can do what ever you want to the piping: Heat Wrap, Powder Coat, or even spray with hi-temp engine paint. Personally I have a powder coating company about 10 miles from my house so you know what I'm doing.
Hope this helped, let me know how it goes if you attempt.
