Default After installing BIM and BTB, smoke comes out from IM...

After I installed BIM and BTB, I started the car. First time, it took a while for the car to start (circulating oils?). Next time it started like normal. But this time, smoke came out from IM and I am not sure if this is suppose to happen first few times. Or, is there any part I should check?

I have few more questions.

1. How hard should I bolt down the manifold to the engine? There is gasket between engine and IM, so I shouldn't bolt it too hard, right?

2. If it is gasket's problem, where can I purchase intake manifold gasket?

Sounds ike a ripped IM gasket. Fuel mixture is probably going ot of the head. Does it smell like fuel?

Contact JAWS 01 on this site, he can tell you the torquing specs as well as a probable diagnosis.

You should have wiped the gasket and manifold surfaces clean before reinstalling the manifold. Some people have seen 'sludge' buildup around their valves(mine was cleaner than I expected), if you had oil ot buildup there and it made it down on the gasket or ran down the side of the block, it will smoke until it burns off. It doesn't help the gasket seal to have it there either.

Was the smoke coming from the top of the IM? Behind? Was the IM clean or somewhat oily? It sounds like you may have flooded it the first time while playing with your throttle.

As for torque--it's not much. Something like 10-15 lb-ft, but you'd have to check the WebTech to confirm that. Because it's not too tight, the gasket should be fine.

It is white smoke and it does smell something burning (probably fuel). As for smoke, I cannnot really tell, but I think it is coming from the bottom of the manifold.
Also, smoke come out even after I turn off the engine for one or two minutes.

I will check Jaw's site.

Thanks for help.

White smoke could be coolant too--make sure you didn't disrupt any of the line that are below the throttle body there. It has a sweetish smell when burning, fuel has the distinctive gasoline smell.

First question is who bored out your componets. Was in Onpol? Did you have it done localaly? The IM is easy to screw up if you get to cloes to the injectors.

It has some sweet smell to it... so do you think that it is fuel coming off from IM? Or is this smoke coming from some other hose... I can't really tell.

A sweet smell ususally is related to coolant leaks. Anti-freeze smells sweat when hot. Did you redo you coolant hoses to your TB where they route back on themselves. Check those hoses for leaks and make sure the secure. Please where did you get your stuff bored at?

Yeah, I'd go hunting for a coolant leak. There are a few coolant hoses connected around the driver's side of the IM, if you pushed one too far while wrestling with the IM bracket it could easily be leaking. I would consider putting proper hose clamps (screw type, not compression) on all of those lines, but I tend to be anal that way.

But anyways--get out the flashlight and look for green puddles around the back side of the engine! Push all those lines on tight wink
