This DIY is for vehicles without Air Conditioning, refer to HMAservice.com/webtech for directions on removing your AC belt from the AC pump and crank pulley

Unfortunetly I was working on the side of the road with windo Arizona contions and around 4:00pm the thunderstorms started to roll-in so pictures of the REASSEMBLY are minimal and basically non-existant. You can use logic and commen sence to re-install the parts in the somewhat reverse order you see for the dissasembly. I hate to use the cliche Chiltons "Reassembly in reverse order" directions but the thunderstorm was rusing me to finish soon. I was in a field in the middle of nowhere with lightning stricking within 1/2 mile and surrounded by telephone poles. I was praying they would strick the poles before me. LOL

Step1.
Drive 60mph and suddenly have car die in the middle of the Arizona desert plains. Walk for 1/2 a day back home and pick up other beater with tools and large rug (to place tools on). LOL

Step2.
Open timing belt cover (upper half) and see this
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0005.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0004.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0003.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0002.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0001.jpg

Step3.
Loosen pass side front wheel lug nuts.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0041.jpg

Step4.
Jack front of vehicle up
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0042.jpg

Step5.
Utilize jacktands...
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0043.jpg

Step6.
Remove Coolant Resevoir and Power Steering Fluid Resevoir
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0048.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0047.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0046.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0045.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0044.jpg

Step7.
Remove Power Steering Fluid Line from the top of the Power Steering Pump (I think it was a 1in. socket).
May need breaker bar..
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0050.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0049.jpg

Step8.
Remove belt tensioner bolt from top of Power Steering Pulley
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0052.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0051.jpg

Step9.
Remove Belt from the Power Steering Pump pulley and remove lower Power Steering Pump mounting bolt
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0055.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0054.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0053.jpg

Step10.
Remove Power Steering Pump from engine bay and set aside
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0057.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0056.jpg

Step11.
Remove Tensioner Bolt from the top of the alternator
Once this bolt is removed, both bolts that look like a plus sign (+) when together will be free to be removed and set aside.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0059.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0058.jpg

Step12.
Now go under the lifted car and look for the lower alternator mounting nut (it screws onto a stud that slides through the lower portion of the alternator). Just loosen it enough to be able to rotate the alternator back and forth, no need to completely remove the nut. It is located directly above the oil filter's location.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0061.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0060.jpg

Step13.
Move alternator towards the firewall to loosen tension on the alternator belt and remove belt from alt pulley.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0063.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0062.jpg

Step14.
Remove both power steering belts and alternator belts and set aside
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0065.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0064.jpg

Step15.
Use 10mm wrench to remove the 4 bolts holding the water pump pulleys in place. This is where small hands and patience comes in handy. You are trying to remove 4 bolts from a rotating surface so something must hold the pulley in place while you break the 4 bolts loose, I just used my hand and got a few scrapes..
Once they get loose you can actually use the pulley to completely loosen the screws by just rotating the pulley counterclockwise, wink1.gif
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0067.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0066.jpg

Step16.
Take off expensive watch to avoid scrapes (oops, too late)
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0068.jpg

Step17.
Once you have all four water pump pulley (also called accessory pulleys) bolts off remove both pulleys from the water pump and the engine bay and set aside
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0071.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0070.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0069.jpg

Step18.
Remove the power steering fluid line mounting bracket from the engine mount (one bolt)
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0073.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0072.jpg

Step19.
Remove engine bracket from the side of the engine wall (this first picture is taken from the firewall facing towards the front of the car ...inside the engine bay). ..to show you the location of the two bolts holding the bracket to the engine's side wall
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0075.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0074.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0077.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0076.jpg

Step20.
Remove Crank Pulley Bolt (needs a LOT of force to remove)
i did this by placing a 22mm socket on the bolt and propping it up with a breaker bar to keep it from turning. Then I went inside the car and cranked the engine for one millisecond (is all it takes) and the bolt is broken loose. Then you can remove the bolt by hand from the crank shaft and set aside. Then remove the crank pulley by carefully sliding it STRAIGHT off the crank shaft, and setting aside.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0090.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0089.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0088.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0087.jpg

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0086.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0085.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0084.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0083.jpg

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0082.jpg

Step21.
Remove lower half of timing belt cover, mine only had 4 bolts in but there are actually 5 holding it down to the engine's side. Here pictured are there locations. After removal set-aside, be careful not to damage gasket (just used to keep debris from entering, no fluid will leak out of it or anything..)
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0095.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0094.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0093.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0092.jpg

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0091.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0081.jpg

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0079.jpg
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0078.jpg

Step22.
Flange may fall out when removing lower timing belt cover, if not go down below to the crank pulley's previous location and remove the flange.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0096.jpg

Step23.
Remove motor mount
1.) two nuts and one bolt on top of motor mount (you can leave that little counterweight held on by 10mm bolts, no need to remove).
2.)one large bolt through center of motor mount
3.) two bolts and one nut (screwed onto stud stuck into engine) to be removed from engine side wall
See pictures
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0111.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0110.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0109.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0108.jpg

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0107.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0106.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0105.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0104.jpg

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0103.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0102.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0101.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0100.jpg

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0099.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0098.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0097.jpg

Step24.
Before you can remove the last portion of the motor mount mounting bracket you must remove the tensioner pulley (one bolt). Be careful not to strip threads of stud when removing mounting bracket for engine mount from the engine side wall stud. Set all removed parts aside
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0115.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0114.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0113.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0112.jpg

Step25.
Now you can remove the old timing belt (in my case the obliterated/shredded to pieces timing belt). If this is the case for you be sure to remove all traces of leftover timing belt.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0126.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0125.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0124.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0120.jpg

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0118.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0117.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0116.jpg

Step26.
After putting new timing belt in place over crank pulley re-install motor mount (sorry no pics).

Step27.
Re-align crank sprocket pulley timing marks. There is a mark on the pulley and a mark on the engine block's side wall (both are engraved into the metal, wipe away grease and dirt to find if neccessary).
You will need to put the large 22mm crankpulley bolt back into the crank sprocket pulley to rotate the sprocket pulley to it's aligned position
See pictures
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0133.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0132.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0131.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0130.jpg

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0129.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0128.jpg

Step28.
align upper camshaft timing mark. there is a hole in the cam shaft pulley that needs to be aligned with a diagonal mark engraved on the cylinder head. It should be aligned with this mark when looking through the hole at eye level.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0138.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0134.jpg

Step29.
Here's where things started to get hairy and the thunderstorms started to roll-in, so sorry no more pics from here on out, re-install everything in reverse order.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0140.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h_PICT0139.jpg

damn that sucks that you had to do it out there.

but a good DIY man. cool.gif

'treezy Jul 1, 2006 11:19 PM

Thanks, even though putting the old belt back on was useless (the pistons already slammed into the valves the instant the k spec timing belt shredded itself to pieces) I decided to do it anyways and try my luck while praying the valves only suffered minimal damage.

unfortunetly upon putting the non-shredded timing belt back on (in place of the shredded one) the car did nothing other than spin the starter over and over. No ignition or combustion. I know the spark plugs were getting spark because i could feel the wires vibrating with electric pulses from the coils during cranking. It won't ignite and combust in the chambers (and in turn START the car to idle) because the valves are bent and don't move properly. So I am screwed to the MAX!

Hope at least someone gets to find this useful..

Tiburonmoo Jul 2, 2006 03:02 AM

Damn that sucks man! I guess I won't be buying the timing belt kit from KSpec any time soon. 02.gif

I know your "The Injiption Magician" and all but how did you turn that beat up old ?bmw? into a 350Z???

'treezy Jul 2, 2006 03:24 PM

a magician never reveals his secrets..
=)
and that's beat up old bmw (2002) CLASSIC! to you mister..
cool.gif
ill trade it for a beta 2.0L and manual tranny. wink1.gif

(have fun at the Autofest)

~THE SHOCKER~

REDZMAN Jul 2, 2006 06:58 PM

Holy shit man, that looks horrible. Nice DIY though.

Let me know if there is anything I can do for you mang.

'treezy Jul 2, 2006 08:45 PM

you can look for cams and maybe a full set of valves for a 1.8L because i have a 2.0L head with Viper right now (no differences as far as I know) and once i get that back I am going to attempt to get it running again.

Also you can post any opinions on what the hell caused the belt to shatter itself to pieces. Too bad I installed it myself because if i had a shop do it the place I got the belt from (not to be mentioned to keep certain 10k+ posters from being butt hurt, LOL nana.gif) would be getting a mouthful and then some....
..too bad. =(

Or you can look for a complete low mileage 2.0L engine with manual tranny for me.

Alex01tib Jul 2, 2006 09:55 PM

wow man thats terrible, how long was the belt on there? Is this a sign that the Kspec kit isnt to be trusted?

Jay-M Jul 2, 2006 10:10 PM

that blows man!!!

i hope you get 'er running again soon

great job on the diy man... props!!!
