So you want to put in a shoft-shifter eh? Well good for you, so did I. Which did you purchase? Pff, I don't care, but I picked up a B&M Short Shifter and she does the trick just fine. Now where on this fine planet can you pick up a B&M? Most car part stores can order them in. I found three places in my city that can bring them in for under $200 (Canadian) so that's not bad - still fairly close to cost).

Next up, you'll need a flat-head screwdriver, a pair of needle-nose pliars and a 14mm open-ended wrench for everything to run smoothly. If you picked up the B&M shift-kit, then you won't need anything else other than about 15 minutes of your time and a jacket on while installing it if you live up here in Canada (was -18 while I did it, by god!).

Step 1: Unscrew the shift-knob... I don't think you folks need a picture for this..
Step 2: Remove the shift-boot.. and no, do NOT 'un-screw' those little black screws on the top like most of us have tried at one point or another... (sigh)
Step 3: Remove the cotter-clip holding on the retaining fore-aft cable, here's where you'll need the needle-nose pliars unless you have small little fingers.

Step 4: Remove the fore-aft cable, this should just slip off to the left real easily.

Step 5: Remove the pivot-nut, and here is where you'll use the wrench. YAY! Also remove all of the other washers and stuff, HOWEVER be sure to stack them up in the EXACT SAME ORDER.

Step 6: Take off the return-spring, but be careful cuz you'll have to put this beast back on properly later.

Step 7: Remove the pivot-bolt by pulling it straight out (towards the engine)

Step 8: Remove the shifter-assembly... this really doesn't need a photo but you never know...

Step 9: Take out the plastic bushing from the stock shifter

Step 10: Replace the bushing into the same spot in the new shifter

Step 11: Install the new shifter by lining up the pivot bushing into the original stock position.

Step 12: Install the pivot bolt again

Step 13: CAREFULLY install the return spring

Step 14: Install the pivot nut

Step 15: Replace the fore-aft cable assembly just as you took it off

Step 16: Snap on the E-Clip --OR-- cotter-clip, whichever your kit came with. You'll probably need the needle nose pliars again though

Step 17: Install the shift boot
Step 18: ENJOY!!!!!

re-upload the pix or something, I only see red X's, I have a SS installed but it moves side to side while in gear, thats not too good, I was trying to see if you had pix of the installation up close of the return-spring and under the shifter assembly. If you could re-upload the pix that would be very helpful, cuz I think I am missing a washer or something or the return-spring is in wrong.

for those of you that care, the right hand cable in there adjusts the front to rear position of the shifter knob, when i installed my b&m i was hitting my knuckles on the cup holder, adjusting the cable, i moved mine back a little so i wouldn't hit it. there isn't a very large range of adjustment, but its enough.

Interesting note there tibwrcsbj. I have to "Palm" the shift knob into 1, 3, 5 otherwise I hit my hand on the cup holder. I will have to look into that.

java, i don't remeber exactly what size it was, but i THINK i used 2 - 11mm wrenches to do it, one to hold the long piece the other to loosen the nuts. and like i said, there isnt very much range in there but it was enough.

Don't expect it to look like you are in fourth gear when you're in nuetral. i'd say moving all the way back as i did, it moved maybe a 1/4".

you can still hit your knuckles on the cup holder if its SLAMMED ( I only tried this as a test when i installed it, i don't drive like that) into gear, but for normal shifting, you won't.
