My mother-in-law asked me this week to prove to her boss she needed an iPad. I gave her several selling points, then I told her why she didn't need one. She responded and asked why so many people want them - she couldn't understand it. "Unless I'm going to be on the internet all the time, I don't need one, especially for $500. My Android does more and cost less."
Duh.
I did try to urge her towards the Samsung Galaxy if she was going to get anything.

tibbykid: i understand where you're comming from. I'm in the same boat. It would do me no good to buy a tablet when I have a netbook. This is an emerging technology and it's too early for me to buy it. I leave that for the apple sheep.
This device does not replace anything that you own. It is a new nitch for the electronics market. It allows you the freedom of mobility around the house while using only one hand to use the computer. You can optionally attach a keyboard and mouse (dunno if that's possible with Apple products, but it works on android). If you're considering buying a dedicated reader, then you should reconsider and probly buy an Android Pad... Why carry around a knife when you can carry around a swiss army knife?
It's not a laptop and it's not a phone. it's a tablet. It has a large visible screen.
It would make sense very soon to have large companies issue tablets to each employee. Say you work at an automotive plant in the engine section... In the morning you pick up a tablet in the yellow case which has all the apps you need to do your job (check if parts are in stock, report issues with a vin number, raise a flag at your station to get your boss....). While the guy working on the paint line grabs the tablet in a red case which has all the apps needed to do his job ( mark vehicles as ready to be driven off, paint codes, so on...). This will reduce the total information management infrastructure of a large company to 2 guys. One to manage the wireless networks, databases and security. The other will design and flash tablets with the proper software.
They're not useful now. Not even remotely. They're designed to get the money of the consumer and that's about it. They lack function and are too expensive. If you buy an iPad, I'm going to call you an idiot and a fanboy because they are less useful then the Android Pads. Soon enough though, we will be seeing this technology evolve to the point of usability. Currently the limitation is the software programming. The application programmers mainly think desktop general purpose. Pads are special purpose, not general purpose.
