Crappy Alarm Actuators
OK those who read my posts (that would be none then lmao.gif ) will remember me saying how my Tib came fitted with the Clifford rebadged 'hyundai advanced security system'.
So it didnt work when I got it, but thanks to my knowledge of programming cliffords I got it running last year and it works like a charm, including the motion sensors and so on.
So about 6 months ago my door lock actuator (the alarm one) starts whirring, sounds like its chewing gears.
No probs. ordered one from ebay (about $8) and put it in.
Now I noticed when doing this that they are plastic, with plastic teeth and pathetic little motors.
This one lasted a whopping month before it started whirring, and eventually the motor broke and it didnt do anything. To top this off the motor got stiff and so I had to put alot of pressure on the key to open the lock.
As soon as the rain subsided 2 days ago (I have gotten soaked trying to get in my car so many times its ridiculous) I decided to fit a new one (I ordered 2 this time lol).
Problem was when I was doing my fuel filter I got locked out of the car (again this was in another thread) and my stupid step brother was trying to slim jim my door open.
So when I got into the door yesterday I noticed that the rods were all bent and it took me HOURS to dial them all back in so that the car locks and unlocks properly.
Im pretty pissed about it, but whats annoying me the most is how crap these actuators are.
Theyre not expensive (last 2 were $7 for both) but theyre crappily made.. I mean, I have had 3 in the car this year alone for heaven's sake.
Why cant they make them like really strong and robust and charge $30 for them? maybe make them from metal or something or at least put metal gears in them so they dont shred all the time. I dont care what they cost Im just sick and tired of taking off the door panels and having to do all this work on it.. Not only that but I got covered in that black stuff that sticks the coating on and its all over my hands.
Grr.

I would see about getting Factory ones Pandy. At $7 a pop.. you have already $21 in trying to keep these working. Sounds like you are being penny wise and dollar foolish in buying these cheap arse things.
I try and stay factory in most things in my cars, even if it means using parts from different cars, if the parts are still factory, they should last

The thing is there's no such thing as a factory one according to Hyundai.
I phoned them when the first one went out and asked them and they said that they came with the alarm and they dont stock them, hence why I went looking for third party ones.
It all seems to be working now, hopefully the bugger will hold.

there are no factory trigger actuators. those were a dealer installed thing for keyless entry.
i had the same problem with those aftermarket actuators. you need to make sure the rod is moving PERFECTLY straight in and out.

I've gone through several myself. If you get two years out of one, consider yourself lucky. I forked out some extra cash for DEI ones this past summer, they are definitely better quality than the generic ebay ones.

when installing a actuator, ensure that it is paralell to the lock bar and mounted firmly. There should be VERY little flex in the system Keep the distance between the bar and the actuator as small as possible.
The biggest thing that will kill an actuator is pushing in a direction that can't be moved.
Also, you can see about getting a solenoid instead of gear driven one. They may cost alot more but solenoids have no gears, they just have a magnet and a coil. When you power the coil, it shoots the magnet one way or the other.

+1 for the dei actuator, I put one in my car and haven't had any problems for over a year. I also have two in my wife's neon and heres work great too. Any Circuit City should stock them, or at least special order them for you.
