In Class Final Exam Essays

so the format of my history final is 3 questions about 3 different time frames in history

at the beginning of class, the 3 questions are put in a hat and drawn by one of the students at random

the you have 1 hour to write about everything you know about the subject, NO notes allowed

there is NO rubric on what the teacher wants you to know

literally the way he grades is "the more facts, the better the grade" so basically what you end up doing is studying all 3 questions and hope you get the one you know the most about

the midterm was the same way (only we had 40 minutes instead of 1 hour)the subject chosen was foreign policy between 1890 and 1930 i wrote a 4 page essay and only ended up with a "B"

oh and spelling and grammar are graded also.

well here i am studying for my final

question 1: "The New Era"- pretty easy, list social, economic, and political developments during the 20s

question 2: "The New Deal"- ok, little harder, list how the new deal either benefited or hurt certain demographics of people like workers and farmers

now here is where sh*t gets real, this is word for word how this question is asked

question 3: Racial slavery ended in America in 1865. In 1868, the 14th amendment to the Constitution extended civil rights to include all Americans, whether white or black. Two years later, in 1870, the 15th Amendment guaranteed that the right to vote could not be denied to citizens on the basis of their race or color. Almost a century later, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Why were these laws necessary, a hundred years after the adoption of the Amendments that insisted all Americans were equal? Trace the history of race relations in America since the end of the Civil War in the 1860s to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.

Honestly, i would rather have to write all 3 of those essays and turn them in by the final, than be forced to remember 100 years of race relations

tl;dr

my teacher is an a**hole who makes unrealistic essays

Ach

I guess the saving grace is that you already know the questions. I'd write practice essays for each one, then grade them yourself. It makes me 100% mad when profs don't hand out a rubric - apparently being psychic is part of the college entry reqs these days.

This class's grading system is as followed

6 tests done, no homework no other grades

just the 6 tests

he takes your 5 best, averages them, and thats your grade

so far my grades are B,B,A,A

my final is actually 2 separate tests, the cumulative multiple choice exam and the final essay

so based on my previous grades and the fact that this sh*t is easy, ive been studying for the multi choice part more than the essay

if i get a "c" or better on the multi choice, i can still average out to a B for the class and skip the essay entirely

Im only going to study the other 2 and hope for the best, if that question is pulled, im gonna pull an answer from my ass and turn it in.

Take the stance of, "it's all bullshit" and "political gain" - it seems that he's giving you fact and then asking for opinion. "Why" was it necessary. It would be easier and more entertaining for you to write a rebuttal as to why it wasn't necessary and use this as an example as to why the political system is flawed.

hmm not a bad idea....empty laws

gave what that generation believed were subhuman(black men) the right to vote before white women could

preach equality, place white men above all

so i finish with part one of the final and the professor calls me and 2 people to the front.....

im like sh*t now what

he says "do you guys think you got at least a B on part one?" it was pretty easy so we all said yeah

he replies with "you 3 have the highest grade in the class, im not going to waste your time and mine by forcing you to take the essay. Have a great break, good job"

Congratulations!!!!

History is one of my weakest subjects just through sheer quantities of information. I remember screwing up my history exams so bad. There were about 20 topics to study, from which 5 were going to be selected from which you had to write about 4. I couldn't remember all that! Yet there were people that would write until their fingers broke and took up 2 full booklets!

The nice part was that my summer professor had a nice rack. She bent over and caught me. I think that helped. http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/upherebl.gif
