Default ball joints and tie rods

i just found out that i need to replace my ball joint and tie rod. i have a couple of friends that know their ways around steering and suspension. they offered to help me to change them since between all of us we have the tools to do it. how hard of a job is it and is it something we can definitely do in the garage?
