Default How hard is it?

Sounds like a personal question, no? Seriously, I went to get my car alighned today and found out one of my Tierods is toast.. got close to an inch of play in it (at the wheel) thanks to my shunt into a kerb in Philly at the last meet.

The shop wanted 50 bucks for the part and 90 to install.. I went to the dealer and they wanted 35 for the parts.. so I used my dealer credit car from the lawsuit and bought both sides... anybody replaced their tie rods on the Tib? I have the factory manuals, but I just wanted to hear how hard it actually was to do.

I have full tools.. including access to a compressor and air wrench and impact wrench.. not to mention a forklift for raising my car up so I can get under it if need be.

They're not too difficult. Webtech and a manual should be all you need, along with a couple hours (2-3) of your time since you won't know exactly what your doing. Assuming you get no problems, and you probably shouldn't.

yea.. I have done them on other cars... so I have a clue, just wanted to make sure nobody had any hidden surprises. For some reason though, I ALWAYS wind up doing suspension and brake repairs in the dead of winter.

Winter is evil to those parts. tongue.gif Use the Lancia as a beater tongue.gif LOL J/K. If you've done them on other cars, I haven't seen anything unique about the tierods when I've been messing around with it. Should be fairly easy for ya.

Tie rods are easy to get to, but you DO want a pipe wrench because the flats on the tie rods can be rotated by the factory into the strangest places. Raise the car up, pop the boots and go to work; you will want to use every little nook and cranny, a tip would be to move the wheels so that the tie rods are in a better position to be worked on[ie. just at the big hole where the rod eits the main chassis structure]

Good luck with it!

tibby, that could be any number of things...wheel shaking could just be from messing up your balance, and the noise could be from bending any number of things in the suspension, axles included, or even the whole knuckle....believe me, i did it.
