Now theres problems, when I went to pull out the other day after warming my car up it was bucking back and forth and wouldn't move, the ebrake is still engaged even when it is released by the handle. when pulling the handle back up it has no resistance until about 8 clicks and barely brakes more
i kept playing around with it and decided to drive it, the ebrake was only on slightly and the car moved with some braking still slowing it down, a block or two the car drove fine and the ebrake was not engaged anymore. note the handle does go all the way down, its getting alot colder in the NE now |
i've had the same problem during the winter. apparently it freezes from the moisture that gets around the heated caliper (same when it's cold and you start your car and water comes out of tailpipe) i've had to replace the entire caliper. mine didn't release at all until i replaced it.
i remember it's best not to use your ebrake during the winter. i never really was sure what really causes this. or how it can be fixed without replacing the caliper. i'm sure there is a way. mine happened 5 years ago... |
high temp grease maybe?

Its not so much the caliper but the e-brake cable rusting inside. Trust me and here is the kicker, when it starts doing that, when you NEED your parking brake, it sometimes does not catch all the way, If you can get under the back of the car, the end of the cables have boots on them, see if yours are cracked or disintegrated.
They are not to terribly hard to replace, Spray all the bolts down really good with PB blaster FIRST Begin removing interior parts to get under center console for when you need fish the cables up. Spray bolts again Have lunch then replace Cost, roughly 80 bucks per side. |
remove center console...take the cable loop off....run it through the body...remove the 2 10mm bolts and remove from calipers...pretty straight foward
the cables need to be replaced....just do both at the s ame time... |
Keep in mind hes in the northeast of the USA, road salt and 8+ years of road grime on the bolts under the car so soaking the bolts will save you the headaches...
agreed though, if your doing one do both. |
i'm aware i'm from new jersey/PA...my bolts were definetly rusted on there pretty good...but a little PB blaster and it wont be an issue.
