I know what claybaring does to your paint but is there any reason why someone should clay their wheels? I have powdercoated wheels, not painted. So is it wasted energy to do that to them?

If they're powdercoated, dont waste your time. If painted, it's a good idea to clay to remove any crap that might be in the paint.

I know you said wheel, but when I read the title I imagined someone claybaring their tire. Thought that was funny. Nothing else to add here, have a great day.
