The Facelifted Toyota 86 Gets Five More Horsepower, Rejoice
The Scion FR-S is dead. Long live the slightly-more-powerful Toyota 86.
Yesterday, we reported that the Scion FR-S would be renamed the Toyota 86 now that Scion is dead. Turns out, the Toyota 86 is also getting a slightly different look and a few extra horsepower, too. We like more horsepower.
Visually, the 86 receives minor changes front and rear, with a slightly more aggressive air opening up front and cleaned up taillight graphics.
The shocks and spring rates have been slightly altered, which should improve handling.
You can also expect the manual transmission version to be faster than the outgoing Scion FR-S. It gets five more horsepower, a five ft.-lb. bump in torque, and revised gear ratios. The automatic's output stays the same as last year, at 200 hp and 151 lb.-ft.
That's not a huge increase, but we're certainly not going to complain about more power. Never complain about more power.

Yea, I heard about it since it's making its rounds across the internets. Everyone is either laughing uncontrollably, or fanboys are saying things like "It's a lot for such a small Miata-like vehicle."

Yep. The AEM made 11.7 whp on my '01 Tib. Back in my HP days, it was one of the first tests we did. I actually installed the intake on the dyno. The two runs were about 20 minutes apart to remove as many variables as possible.

I stand corrected. I have an Ebay Injen copy and never noticed anything other than the noise increase, I always assumed a couple hp gain at best.
On the other hand the 4.05fd swap and 300 pound weight reduction was very noticeable...

I don't care what anyone says, the 86 has enough horsepower.
Does it have a lot? No not really. Is it fast? No not really. It's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be fun and it succeeds. It's got half again as much power as the RD at a similar weight.
If you want a 300+hp 86, make it happen yourself it will be cheaper than an option box from Toyota and you'll have a better car. A production 300+hp 86 would be made heavier to ensure that there aren't reliability issues and that would make the car worse.
