Was on junk yard today saw this car it looks like battery exploded pretty bad melting the headlight and the fuse box and all around it, all engine bay is covered with white particles that looks like sand.



Now inside both airbags were deployed and all interior covered with more white powder this time from airbags.



Crazy stuff hope everyone was okay, what battery type you think it was AGM or regular based on powder?



Why did it explode? If it was while charging would airbags still fire?



Now this leads me to think that car manufacturers should force engine off when airbags deployed in case battery explodes at full freeway speed...

Engine fire. Notice the black headlight? The white powder is from a fire extinguisher. Exploded battery would just spray acid everywhere. More likely, the positive terminal was corroded, had high resistance, melted and caught the wiring on fire. Seen it before.

The powder is definitely from fire suppressant foam. They cant use water due to the engine being greasy and oily. It'll just spread the flames. The foam they use actually starves the fire and puts it out almost instantly.

Engine off = no power steering + no power brakes. Bad idea mm'kay?

^ what all those guys said. The fire department must have got there quick because that engine bay doesn't look as destroyed as some I've seen.
