Default How difficult is it to get good at drifting?

How long does it take to get good and how likely is it that it happens? Is it just a natural ability to pick up drifting? Or is it more about the setup on the car?

It's not something that can easily be picked up in the just a matter of hours or days. Sometimes it can take many months or even years to really perfect it. People who do it professionally know their car inside and out and can make it do just about anything they want. Setup has a lot to do with it, but it's mostly driver skill and knowing what to do with that properly set up car.

You need all of the parts to the equation to be really great. If you're a great drifter you can make almost anything drift, and if you're a bad drifter you can't drift even if a car is set up well for it.

If you want to learn, autocross is great for developing car control at the limits safely. You will need that ability and learning it by trying to drift is not going to be nearly as easy. Once you have the basics down go to a drift event, especially if there's a novice school. Since the SCCA has adopted drifting as one of it's programs there is a lot more support and you can go learn it in a safe controlled environment.

I can drift, but I'm not great at it. The Miata pretty much needs it to be wet because it has a lot of grip to overcome with it's current setup. It sure can be fun though!
