You guys think that there are a lot of mechanics out there who will sabotage your car or do sketchy things so that you will return to have more work done?

I mauled a guy in the face with a bent stub axle that he claimed he replaced. Not only did he charge me a butt-load of money for a repair that he didn't do, then he tried to get me for a new transmission as well. There are some seriously shitty people in this world.

The likelihood of a tech trying to scam you is inversely proportional to their pay rate.

^ this. Which is why you should never go to Jiffy Lube etc. for your maintenance.

Still plenty of dealer techs who make about the same money as a jiffy lube "tech"

It's worst for girls. A lot of mechanics will take advantage easily of a girl because they might not know any better and will go by what the tech tells them they need.

For the record... most of the time it's at a chain store type place. You rarely here about people getting screwed by an actual dealer. Most of the "I got screwed by the dealer" stories I hear are mostly the fault of the customer. Either they didn't tell the dealer the whole story about what was wrong with the car or the customer is an amateur tech and thought they knew what was wrong, but were incorrect.

One of the local Hyundai dealerships refused to fix my transmission under warranty unless I paid for a clutch replacement. If I paid for a clutch replacement, which they were 100% sure was the problem, they would "take a look at the transmission while they were in there".

That was about 165k miles ago. The transmission won't shift from 1st to 2nd at all anymore, and I'm still on the factory clutch. Inspected it when I replaced the engine 50k miles ago. I planned on replacing it but it was in nearly new condition so didn't bother.

So you paid for a clutch replacement, but you're still on the factory clutch?
