I never realized how well the pit beneath it captured all that fiery mess. Is it simply the thrust of the engines that is causing the initial burst of flame to get sucked back down like that?
Also, where the hell did all that energy go? To continuously draft that air through, there must have been some huge f*cking vents in the ground somewhere, right?

Yes, and yes. There were big tunnels for the flame to vent through. If you have seen the Men In Black movie where they travel through time, these tunnels are a plot device.

This is the shutlle... skip forward to 1:20 for final sequence start. At launch, you can see how far the horizontal blast travels. The Saturn V blast is even larger.
