Default Problem with short shifter install

So I put in my obx short shifter tonight. First problem is that the little hole the shifter peg goes into that controls the side to side movement. The stock shifter had a little plastic cup that went on that peg. I've tried installing with and without that plug on my new shifter. Side to side movement works but it is really loose. When I put it into gear, the shifter always goes back to center (it goes in all gears, but returns to the neutral looking position every time). It works, but kind of weird how the shifter always looks like its in neutral no matter what gear you are in. Its because the new shifter fits in that hole really loose. How did you guys fix that?

Second issue is I can put it into first easily without the surround on. But when I put the surround/boot back on its really hard to put into first gear. It works fine if I go into second and then first. But that's kind of annoying. Did you guys have this problem too?

Did you guys not have problems getting into 1st gear with your short shifter installs?

Does it go back to the nuetral looking position no matter what gear your in?

Any short shifter I have installed has always been simple and trouble free. There isn't much to screw up. I would double check the shifter and make sure it's the right one for your car or make sure you're not missing an important step.

What I've found from researching is that my short shifter was missing the little white cap that goes on the bottom of the shifter (circled in red in the pictures). The stock one had one, but it didn't fit the OBX. That little white cap stops the shifter from returning to the nuetral looking position while in gear.

Where can I get a replacement white cap?

the stock one SHOULD fit the new shifter, when I installed one in my Accent it did. You need to "slam" the shifter down onto the white cap to make it "pop" on. It doesn't look like it will fit, but will with some help. If that doesn't work hopefully someone that owns a Tib that has a short shifter can help.

Thanks, it actually did fit the OBX, but it seems all loosy goosy even though it fits the ball fine. It's really loose in the shifte hole, giving me this wierd nuetral side to side play.

I'm pretty sure your side to side play is just the strength of the spring itself... I once broke the lil ball and plastic cup right off while dragracing 700kms from home, I just used a reg bolt that I grinded the the head round with a grinder in a home depot isle and it lasted 2 years lol , till that one broke off haha.

I don't think so. I can feel when the spring movement turns into the actual shifter side to side movement. Spring acocunts for maybe half of the side to side feel which I was used to, but then you feel the actual ball engage the side shifter movement. I guess I'll see if I can just jimmy rig something to fit the cup snug in the hole.

You did put all the little "cups" back on to the new shifter, right? It was hard to tell from your first post.If you go to the TWM website, they have a full download on install instructions step by step for your car. I know you bought the OBX, but the installs are all the same.

That's the thing, mine was missing the new cap for the bottom peg/ball. The stock one doesn't fit it properly either. Guess I'll have to try to jimmy rig something...
