Weight Reduction

The stock Tiburon weighs about 2633lbs.

Reducing weight contributes to lower 60' times and less strain on the drivetrain. To reduce weight in your Tiburon, you can follow these steps. They are only suggestions and some are NOT legal on public roads and may NOT be safe. Use your own judgment when following these steps. Some are only for the weekend/track car. They are not in any particular order.



Mod - Weight (Stock) / aftrmkt weight (brand)



<u>Free Mods:</u>

Remove floor mats

Remove spare tire, jack, iron, floor/cover - 30.5lbs / 0.00lbs

Remove the two small brackets and bolts from rear hatch wall

Remove interior plastic panelling

Remove headliner

Remove center console

Remove carpet and padding

Remove passenger seat - 42lbs

Remove Rear seats

Remove Spare Seatbelts

Remove all plastic linings under motor and in fender wells

Remove black plastic louvers/honeycombs in front/rear bumper

Remove foglights and wiring

Remove hood prop (or replace it with something lighter)

Remove hatch strut props (or replace it with something lighter)

Remove cruise control system

Run on low tank of gas (full tank weighs over 100 lbs!)

Remove stereo

Remove Speakers (both rears = 5.3lbs)

Remove the antenna and the wiring to it

Remove long heat shield for exhaust system

Remove intake manifold brace/bolts from underneath

Remove front/rear bumper supports and foam (recommend to replace with lighter material)

Remove impact bars in doors (recommend to replace with lighter material)

Remove metal plate in the glove box cover - 3.0lbs / 0.00lbs

Remove stock battery tray

Remove anti-swaybars (for straight-line drag racing)

Remove plastic spark plug wire cover and side timing belt cover

Remove small counterweights on motor-mount and shift linkage

Remove intake resonator or replace entire intake system

Remove A/C system, including ductwork

Remove Heater system

Remove tranny/flywheel cover plate/bolts

Remove spoiler (for straight-line drag racing)

Remove hood under supports/bracing/skeleton and black heat pad

Remove windshield washer spray system

Remove windshield wipers and their motors

Remove power steering system - 15lbs / 0.00lbs

Remove airbag system

Remove ABS system

Remove charcoal canister

Clean your car!

Put YOURSELF on a diet

ECU covering

Firewall insulation

Remove tow hooks.





<u>Mods that require purchase:</u>

Replace stock wheels with lightweight aftrmkt - 18lbs (stock)

Replace windows with lexan

Use carbon fiber / fiberglass body panels:

- Replace factory hood (33lbs) with a fiberglass hood (18.5lbs). 14.5lb savings.

Replace stock motor parts with lightweight parts:

- Crank Pulley - 3lbs, 15.4oz (Stock) / 9.8oz (OBX) / 13.6oz (JSpeed)

- PS Pulley - 9.2oz (Stock) / 5.0oz (OBX) / 5.6oz (JSpeed)

- Water Pulley - 1lb, .8oz (Stock) / 9.6oz (OBX) / 1lb, .8oz (JSpeed)

*NOTE* weight on Jspeep water pump pulley includes the beta2 sub pulley in it, stock weight shown does not

- Adj. Timing Gear - 16oz (Stock) / 14.4oz (OBX)

- Flywheel - 17.6lbs (Stock) / 7.5lbs (Fidanza) / 8.36lbs (VHR) / 11lbs (Gripforce)

Replace stock battery with a lightweight battery - 36.4lbs (Stock) / 14lbs (Odyssey 680) / 41lbs (Optima Red Top)

Replace dash with carbon fiber

Remove stock gas tank and install fuel cell

Cut out spare tire well and weld in lightweight floor to replace it

Replace Driver Seat - 42lbs / 13.7lbs (Sparco EVO)

Replace steering wheel with aftermarket unit - 7.6lbs / 3.6 lbs (typical ebay wheel)

Replace the rotors and calipers with lightweight options

Run short exhaust system

Lighter radiator

Convert to manual mirrors, or remove the motors

Some thing to buy, too expensive for me, but titanium bolts, I think some people with evos lost about 20 lbs or something, also if you can make a titanium IM, or cf but I tink titanum is lighter because some people replace theirs on the 340r or some kind of lotus I remembered

Most of these mods don't interupt the luxury of the daily driver.
I like to drive "fast with class", so I didn't do things like remove the seats and carpet.

But there are a couple things in there that most people would forget about or never knew before.

C/F fenders is pointless....you're not going to get any huge gains from it. Keep it stock is fine.

Another thing you can add... the Tib's wiring harness is covered in foam up under the dash to keep noise down.. you can spend several evil days removing it.

Personally, all those ideas are great for a full on race car.. but not too practical for a daily driver.

are aftermarket radiators lighter than OEM's? I would like to buy a bigger radiator but would also like to keep the weight down as suggested...

They make lighter radiators than our stocker.

I thought I had added that already, but after looking at it for a while, I knew I was forgetting some things. I also forgot the firewall padding. It's just there for road noise, which I heard isn't much worse than stock.
